I’m often asked what technology I travel with, so here’s my list of must-have tech travel essentials that are always with me when I fly or cruise.

It’s difficult in this technological age to leave your gadgets behind, even when you’re vacationing, supposedly “getting away from it all.” Still, there are certain things we need on our cruises that help make our lives better and easier. Here are mine, which admittedly lean toward Apple products.

Of course, you’ll want to carry most of these items either in your purse/tote or your carry-on, not in your checked bags due to the possibility of damage or theft.

1 | Smartphone

First of all, I can’t live without my phone, especially on a cruise. How else can I easily access my boarding passes, schedules, and dining menus, or take videos of guests hilariously doing the Macarena in the atrium?

My phone of choice is Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro. It works beautifully with my other Apple products at home, plus it takes great pictures, so it’s the most important of my tech travel essentials. Most of the photos you’ll see on this website were taken with the iPhone 13 Pro.

Our Pick

Apple iPhone 13 Pro

Configurable up to 1TB of storage and available in five colors. Pro camera system takes photos that can rival a good DSLR’s.

2 | E-Reader

I’ve had half a dozen Kindles over the years since the e-reader was introduced, and the Paperwhite is my favorite so far. One of the things I love about it is its glare-free display that lets me read my favorite books at the beach or by the pool. And speaking of water, it’s waterproof! When I take my Paperwhite by the pool in the ship’s solarium, I don’t have to worry about it accidentally getting fried.

Our Pick

Kindle Paperwhite

With up to 10 weeks between charges and the ability to store thousands of titles, you don’t have to worry about running out of things to read while traveling or vacationing.

3 | Smartwatch

Although I wear my Apple watch at home, it’s a lot more fun wearing it when I travel. Finally, my exercise and movement rings are closed by the end of each day, proving that I might actually be working off some of the delicious food I’ve been eating on my cruise.

Our Pick

Apple Watch

Get notifications from your phone to your watch as you travel, helping you stay informed and nudging you to make healthy choices. Includes a fitness tracker, blood oxygen and EKG apps, and more.
Set an alarm to get you up early for excursions, and to remind you when you need to return to the ship.

4 | Cruise Power Strip

Whenever we travel, this power strip goes with us. Its flat design makes for easy packing, and the multiple choices of inputs give us flexibility that our former power strip didn’t have.

Our Pick

Cruise Power Strip

With three outlets, two USB-C ports and 1 USB-A port, this cruise power strip gives you lots of options. Plus, the back converts to a US grounded plug, allowing you to use this adapter at home. It’s also cruise-friendly, with no extension cord or surge protection.

5 | Travel Room Thermometer

Call me crazy, but I like knowing how cold my hotel room or cabin is. As soon as I unpack, I pull out my room thermometer and set it on my desk or dresser. It’s nice knowing for sure that a room is hot and it’s not just you having a hot flash.

Our Pick

Travel Room Thermometer

Small and easy to pack, this room thermometer also gives you the relative humidity. Uses a CR2032 battery, which is included.

6 | Wireless Earbuds

My Apple Airpods always go with me when I travel, not only for listening while watching movies onboard planes, but their noise cancellation feature is awesome. Filtering out background noise while you’re trying to nap on your flight is so helpful.

Our Pick

Apple Airpods Pro

With noise cancellation and up to six hours’ listening time, these tiny earbuds can take you through at least a couple of movies or a good nap before needing recharging.

7 | Bluetooth Audio Transmitter for Wireless Earbuds

Now I can use my Airpods to listen to movies while flying! This Bluetooth audio transmitter plugs into my seat’s entertainment system, allowing me to listen to movies and music provided by the airline wire-free.

Our Pick

AirFly

With up to six hours of listening time, this Bluetooth audio transmitter will get you through most flights. Simply plug the transmitter into the plane’s entertainment system, pair it to your wireless earbuds, and sit back and relax without those pesky wires in your way.

8 | Flash Drive

This high-capacity flash drive is a must when I plan to take a lot of videos in addition to pictures while I’m traveling. As a content creator, I take a LOT of images, and having this little drive with me gives me peace of mind that I won’t run out of storage space.

Our Pick

SanDisk Flash Drive

With a capacity of 256GB, this little flash drive can hold as much video and photos as you can possibly take on a vacation. Plus, it connects to either your smartphone or a USB connecter, allowing you to transfer files to a laptop.

9 | Bluetooth Trackers

Now that I have a Bluetooth tracker in every piece of my luggage, I can sit back and relax on the plane after getting a notification on my phone that my bags are actually onboard.

Our Pick

Set of 4 Apple AirTags

Sync these AirTags to your Find My app on your smartphone, and instantly locate your item. Set of 4.

10 | Electronics Organizer

With all these electronics, I have cables to organize. What better than an electronics organizer? It sure beats the plastic baggie that I’d been carrying everything around in before.

Our Pick

Electronics Organizer

Two sections and several pockets allow you to organize your cables, flash drives, SD cards, and more, keeping everything neat and contained.
