If I were cruising with children, I would definitely choose one of the mass-market cruise lines.
Norwegian, however, offers an exclusive suites-only enclave called the Haven, which to me helps this cruise line straddle the line between mass-market and premium cruising.
Who would enjoy these cruise lines most:

- People on a budget
- Families with children and/or teenagers
- Couples looking for a high-energy atmosphere
- Multi-generational families traveling together
- People wanting late-night party options
- Solo travelers
Premium Cruise Lines
Next, we have premium cruise lines. These include Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, and Disney. Premium cruise lines offer a more upscale experience than mass-market lines, with larger cabins featuring higher-quality furnishings and bedding. You’ll also find more dining options, including specialty restaurants.
Except for Disney, which caters to families with children, premium cruise lines tend to have a more relaxed atmosphere than mass-market lines, with fewer high-energy activities, and are therefore more attractive to couples.
If we were cruising as a couple and wanted a more sedate experience without the stuffiness, we would choose a premium cruise line.

- Couples looking for a romantic atmosphere
- People wanting a suite
- Honeymooners
- Retirees looking for a relaxed atmosphere
Luxury Cruise Lines
Then we have luxury cruise lines. These are the more expensive and exclusive options, appealing to travelers who want a higher level of ship-wide service and all-inclusive amenities. Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, and Viking fit into this class.
Luxury cruise lines offer spacious suites with private balconies, personalized service from a butler and/or concierge, and all-inclusive pricing that covers everything from business-class airfare to drinks to shore excursions. You’ll find gourmet dining options and high-end amenities like spas and private lounges. Luxury cruises tend to have a more mature crowd and a more subdued atmosphere than mass-market or premium cruises.
Who would enjoy these cruise lines most:
- People looking for a more luxurious experience
- Cruisers who enjoy smaller ships
- Those who want a more educational focus
- Retirees working on their bucket list
- Cruisers who are looking for new itineraries
If we had a larger budget and were looking for a luxurious cruise with an educational focus and more varied itineraries, we would go for a luxury or ultra-luxury cruise line.
Ultra-Luxury Cruise Lines
Finally, we have the ultra-luxury cruise lines. Extremely pricey, this option is for the discerning traveler who can afford the very best. Think Cunard, Crystal Cruises, and Silversea. Most of these lines have smaller ships that can dock at smaller ports, offering a greater variety of itineraries than cruise lines with only large ships.
Who would enjoy these cruise lines most:
- People wanting a top-level luxury cruise experience
- Those looking for more varied itineraries
- Cruisers wanting a more port-immersive experience
- People looking for an educational cruise
- Cruisers who enjoy a smaller ship
- Retirees working on their bucket list

It all depends on your budget and travel preferences. If you’re looking for a fun, affordable vacation with lots of activities and dining options—or are traveling with children—a mass-market cruise might be the way to go. And if you want the ultimate in luxury and exclusivity, or are looking for off-the-beaten-path itineraries, a luxury or ultra-luxury cruise is the way to go.
