After going on many cruises and dozens of excursions, we have a pretty good handle now on what we will need for any sort of itinerary. Here are our suggestions for what you might want to consider for your port excursion day bag.
Small Daypack or Waterproof Bag
To carry all your items comfortably, you will need a bag of some sort, depending on your itinerary for the day. A waterproof bag can be especially useful for water-based activities or rainy locales. For sightseeing excursions in large cities, a theft-resistant crossbody bag is ideal. Otherwise, a lightweight backpack or a canvas tote can be just the thing.
Travel Documents
Always carry a copy of your passport, cruise ID, driver’s license, and any tickets or reservations you might need for the day. Keeping them in a ziploc bag protects them from damage in case of an unexpected downpour.
Cash and Credit Cards
Bring some local currency in small denominations for inexpensive purchases and tips, along with a credit card for larger expenses or emergencies.
Sun Protection
Reef-friendly sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, a sun hat or ball cap, and sunglasses are essential to protect you from the sun, especially in tropical destinations. The last thing you want is for a sunburn to ruin your vacation.
Comfortable Footwear
Depending on the activity, you might need sturdy walking shoes or comfortable sandals. If you’re going to a beach, water shoes will be a good idea since it may be rocky and the sand will be hot.
A Light Cardigan Or Shawl
In case you need to cover up to enter a religious site, or to be comfortable in chilly museums, you might want to bring along a lightweight cardigan, shawl, or pashmina.
Water Bottle
Stay hydrated, especially in hot climates. Consider packing a reusable water bottle that you can refill throughout the day.
Snacks
Pack some non-perishable snacks like granola bars, crackers, or nuts, especially if you have special dietary needs or are traveling with children.
Camera or Smartphone

Pack a Ziploc bag with a few first-aid basics like Band-Aids, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications.

Bring along a paperback or your Kindle to relax with, especially if you will be spending time at a pool or beach, or if you have a long bus ride to your destination.
