Want to be more comfortable on long flights? Put together a little flight kit! Read on, and I will show you how to put together a travel kit for long flights.

For long-haul flights, those over seven hours or so, a little more preparation is in order, especially if you aren’t flying business class where they will give you a small flight kit. For this length of time, you will need to be comfortable, entertained, and will want to cover all the bases.

Before you board, pull your flight kit from your suitcase or carry-on and keep it with you. I always carry a tote bag or shoulder bag onboard, so that’s where I’ll tuck my flight kit.

Here is a list of suggested items for you to include in a flight kit for your long-haul flights.

Long Haul Flight Kit Checklist

Would you like to have a Long-Haul Flight Kit Checklist to help you with packing for your next cruise?

Compression socks or regular socks

Sitting for long periods isn’t optimal. If you’re prone to blood clots, you’ll want to put on a pair of compression socks like these once you board your plane. Otherwise, changing into a pair of comfy socks helps make the ride a little nicer.

Our Pick

Compression Socks

4.5

Six pairs of knee-high compression socks in cute patterns or solids that will make wearing them a little more pleasant.

Pros:
  • Prevent swelling and pain
  • Increase circulation
  • Fun patterns

Extra pair of underwear

Because you want to be fresh when you arrive at your destination. Enough said.

Face mask

If the person next to you is coughing your whole flight, putting on a face mask like one of these might be a good idea. You don’t want to get sick and potentially ruin the rest of your trip.

Our Pick

Face Masks

4.7

Pack of 100 three-ply, waterproof black disposable face masks.

Pros:
  • Soft and comfortable
  • Breathable
  • High-efficiency filtration

Noise-canceling headphones or earbuds

Babies crying, a talkative seatmate, or incessant PA announcements can ruin what little rest you might get on the plane. The solution? Simply scroll to your phone’s playlist and pop in your earbuds like these, or watch a movie on your tablet with your headphones.

what we use

Apple Airpods Pro

4.7

Wireless earbuds with mag-safe charging case.

Pros:
  • Customizable fit
  • Up to 6 hours of listening time
  • Active noise cancellation

USB charge cable and plug

On a long-haul flight, chances are your phone’s battery is going to suffer if you’re using it to entertain yourself. Carrying a cable and plug like this one so you can charge it is smart.

OUR PICK

iPhone Wall Charger

4.6

Fast-charging wall-mount charging for iPhone and iPad. Check for compatibility with your device.

Pros:
  • Apple MFi certified
  • 6-ft lightning cable
  • USB Type-C connector

Portable device charger

What if there’s no charging at your seat? Or if you’re in the airport and need a quick boost, and all the plugs are being used? Having a portable device charger with you like this one will definitely come in handy.

OUR PICK

Portable Power Bank

4.5

Pocket-size fast-charging device charger by Anker.

Pros:
  • For iPhone, Samsung + more
  • Slim design
  • Micro USB connector

Something To Read

Entertaining yourself for hours on end can be challenging. But if you’ve brought along your tablet with movies downloaded, you can watch whatever you want, not just what the airline is offering on the seat-back screens.

Want to read a good book? Bring your Kindle with you and you can have thousands of books at your fingertips. More old school? Bring along a paperback or two to pass the time.

what we use

Kindle Paperwhite

4.7

The world’s most famous e-book, now with a larger screen.

Pros:
  • A charge lasts weeks
  • 8GB storage capacity
  • Waterproof

Pen or pencil and notebook

Want to exchange phone numbers or email addresses with your fascinating seatmate? Need to jot down notes and hate doing it on your phone? You’ll be prepared with a pen and notebook set.

Contacts kit

If you wear contacts, a small travel kit is a must. It’s so nice to pop out your lenses and really relax on the plane.

what I use

Contacts Travel Kit

4.4

Travel contacts case with mirror, saline container, and soft tweezers.

Pros:
  • Lightweight plastic
  • Watertight saline container
  • Handy mirror

Eyeglasses or reading glasses

If you pop out your contact lenses, you’ll want your glasses handy, so keep them in your flight kit.

Small hairbrush or comb

No one wants to arrive at their destination with bedhead, right? Carry along a mini hairbrush and you’ll be back to normal in no time.

Baby wipes

After a long flight, being able to wipe your face and neck with these is heavenly. Or if you want to remove your makeup, these wipes will help.

OUR PICK

Clean Baby Wipes

4.7

Package of clean conscious wipes, perfect for sensitive skin.

Pros:
  • Hypo-allergenic
  • Plant-based
  • 99% water

Individual sanitizing wipes

Airlines don’t always give these out anymore, so it’s nice to have some on hand. You can clean your tray table and your seat-back screen, and wipe your hands before a meal or snack.

OUR PICK

Sanitizing Wipes

4.6

Box of 100 individually wrapped sanitizing wipes, perfect for carrying in your purse.

Pros:
  • Fragrance-free
  • For sensitive skin
  • 62% alcohol

Ear plugs

If you don’t bring along noise-canceling headphones or earbuds, silicone earplugs are a must. They’re much better than the foam ones at blocking noise. Trust me…I sleep with these every night.

what i use

Mini makeup kit

If you remove your makeup early in your flight, you might want to reapply it before you land. If so, bring along the basics in your flight kit.

Hand lotion, facial moisturizer, and Lip Balm

The air in a plane is incredibly dry, so bring along travel tubes of hand lotion, facial moisturizer, and lip balm. Your skin will thank you.

Travel toothbrush and toothpaste

After a long flight, your breath isn’t its freshest, so it’s nice to have a toothbrush and toothpaste for freshening up before you land.

Our pick

Travel Toothbrush and Toothpaste

4.6

A Reach toothbrush and a small tube of toothpaste in a reusable pouch with a toothbrush cap.

Pros:
  • TSA-friendly
  • Reusable and resealable
  • Soft bristles

Dental floss

Since picking at your teeth in public is frowned upon, it’s a good idea to have dental floss with you that you can take to the bathroom.

Cough drops

There’s nothing worse than feeling that tickle of an impending cough when you’re on a plane. Carry along a small packet of cough drops, just in case. Mine have come in handy many a time.

what we use

Hall’s Cough Drops

4.7

Package of 30 Hall’s Relief Cherry Cough Drops.

Pros:
  • Cherry flavor
  • Menthol
  • For cough or sore throat

Pain reliever

Headache on a flight? Not if you bring along a packet or two of pain relievers.

our pick

Travel pack of tissues

It’s nice to have your own tissues on hand so you don’t have to keep crawling over your seatmate to go to the bathroom for them.

our pick

Packs of Tissues

4.5

Eight purse-size packages of facial tissues.

Pros:
  • 3-ply sheets
  • Travel size
  • Nine sheets per pack

Snacks

The airlines do their best to keep you fed, but sometimes it just isn’t enough. Bring along a pack or two of snack crackers, nuts, or a granola bar to tide you over.

A durable zipper bag large enough to hold your items

The size of your flight kit will determine how large a zipper bag you’ll need. I use the larger bag in the two-bag option shown below. It’s durable, attractive, and holds all the items I like to carry in my kit. I like these so much that I have four sets in different colors.

what i use

Canvas Makeup Bags

4.7

Set of two canvas zipper pouches for organizing small items.

Pros:
  • Matching set of two
  • One medium and one small
  • Can carry as a clutch

Final Thoughts on Making a Flight Kit

Long-haul flights can be a pain, but not if you’re prepared. Put together your own flight kit so you can be ready for almost any eventuality.
