If you’ve ever wanted to take an authentic Italian pasta cooking class while in Rome, the 3 in 1 Cooking Class in Rome is an excellent choice. In this class, you will learn how to make fettuccini, ravioli, and tiramisu, and even better, you get to eat your work!

For our recent Greek Isles and Italy cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway, we arrived a couple of days early in Rome, just in case of travel issues. I had scheduled us for this cooking class for one of those days, and it was the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Classes are held at Gusto Restaurant on Via Giuseppe Zanardelli in Rome; the class lasts between two and a half and three hours. Cost is about €70 per person. Class sizes are small; ours had eighteen people.

After we arrived and everyone was checked in for the class, each person claimed a spot at the pasta-making setup and put on their apron, which was provided for the class.

But before making pasta, we gathered around another station where our instructor coached us on how to make tiramisu. The dessert would need to rest and be chilled while we enjoyed the rest of the class.

With the help of several students, the instructor walked us through the steps needed to make the tiramisu cream filling. Egg whites were whipped, then mascarpone was gently folded in.

Once everyone had a chance to dip their ladyfingers in coffee, then cover the ladyfingers in their cup with cream filling and dust it with cocoa powder, we were ready to proceed to the pasta-making station.

At each station was a wood board, a plate filled with flour, an egg, a fork, a knife, a small rolling pin, and a pasta cutter.

We gathered around the table, everyone eager to tackle making pasta.

With each type of pasta, the instructor demonstrated exactly what we were to do and how to do it, leading by example. Then it was our turn.

Once we’d made a batch of fettuccini, which was more challenging than expected as you needed to roll your dough and cover the whole board, it was time to make the ravioli.

My ravioli – a success!

After the pasta-making was complete, we were ushered to the restaurant side of the building and offered wine and water to drink. While we waited for our pasta to be cooked, everyone got to know each other a little better.

Making ravioli was a little more challenging than fettuccini, as some ravioli didn’t come out well enough to make it through the boiling process. In the end, five of my ravioli passed the test and made it to my dinner plate.

The sauces used with the pastas were amazing! The ravioli were served with butter and sage, and the fettuccini was served with your choice of three sauces:

  • Amatriciana (tomato sauce and pork)
  • Cacio e pepe (parmesan, pecorino, and pepper)
  • Tomato and basil

I couldn’t get over how delicious the dinner was. Honestly, I could have eaten another plateful!

Afterward, we had coffee or limoncello with our dessert, which was just as tasty as the dinner. It was the best tiramisu I’ve ever had.
