To make it even more fun, let’s plan for my upcoming cruise in January.

In this post, we will discuss what a capsule wardrobe is, how to create one in theory, and then we’ll actually pull one together for a real-world trip.

WHAT IS A CAPSULE WARDROBE?

A capsule wardrobe is a minimalist and curated collection of clothing items that are timeless, versatile, and can be easily mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits. The concept of a capsule wardrobe is to focus on quality over quantity, selecting a limited number of essential and high-quality pieces that can be worn in various combinations. The goal is to streamline your closet, reduce clutter, and simplify the process of getting dressed while ensuring that each item serves a specific purpose and complements the others.

Typically, a capsule wardrobe consists of staple pieces such as neutral-colored tops, bottoms, dresses, and outerwear, along with a few carefully chosen accessories. The idea is to have a collection of items that can be worn season after season, transcending trends and promoting a more sustainable approach to fashion.

A capsule wardrobe can be particularly helpful when packing for a trip because it allows you to maximize outfit options while minimizing the number of items you need to bring. Here’s how a capsule wardrobe can simplify and enhance the packing process for a trip:

Since the items are carefully selected to complement each other, you can create numerous outfit combinations with just a few pieces. Cruise Parameters and Itinerary

Before you start pulling together your cruise capsule wardrobe, there are several things you need to take into consideration. The first is your itinerary.

• How many days is your trip?
• Where are you going?
• What is the climate where you’re traveling to?
• Is there a dress code on your cruise you need to adhere to?

Here is the itinerary for the cruise we are using for our example, a seven-day cruise round-trip from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas, Mexico, and Grand Cayman:

• Travel to the port of Fort Lauderdale, then overnight at a hotel
• Day 1: Embarkation Day
• Day 2: Nassau, Bahamas
• Day 3: At Sea
• Day 4: Cozumel, Mexico
• Day 5: At Sea
• Day 6: George Town, Grand Cayman
• Day 7: At Sea
• Day 8: Disembarkation Day, Travel home

Check The Weather

Although I’m a month out from the trip at this writing, I can still check the weather as far out as possible. The weather for Nassau looks to be in the mid-70s and cloudy for this time of year, Cozumel is about 80 degrees and partly cloudy, and George Town is much the same as Cozumel.

Based on this, we should dress for warm but not oppressively hot weather, and we shouldn’t have to worry about much rain.

Check Your Dress Code

We are traveling on Celebrity Cruises, which has a casual but elegant vibe when it comes to dress code. We will be in The Retreat, their exclusive suites area, and the expectation there is country club casual during the day and smart casual in the evening.

Choose Your Color Palette

For the most mix-and-match options, you will want two neutrals, a light and a dark, as well as a color or two that play well together.

Make A Plan

Now that we have the basics down, it’s time to start planning what clothing we want to take.

Tops: For a seven-day cruise, we will take eight or nine short-sleeve or sleeveless tops in a mixture of solids and patterns.

Bottoms: Keeping in mind the heat, we will take a pair of shorts or a skort, some cropped pants, a pair of jeans, and a pair of dress pants.

Dresses: One or two dresses for the evening will work well.

Outerwear: In case of chilly rooms, we will want a jacket and/or a sweater.

Shoes: Trying to keep shoes to a minimum is always difficult. Three or four neutral pairs is almost always sufficient.

Swimsuits: For a Caribbean cruise, you will want a minimum of two swimsuits and a coverup.

Accessories: Casual jewelry for the day, and a few statement pieces for the evening.

CREATING YOUR OWN CRUISE CAPSULE WARDROBE

Is it necessary to go shopping for a trip? Not necessarily. You probably have most of what you need in your own closet already.

So, shop your closet. Pull out what you think will work for the trip and make a few outfits from those choices, and definitely try them on to be sure they still fit well. Then, if you come up short, is the time to shop.

My choices for this wardrobe came from Chico’s, Nordstrom, and Allbirds. Many of these items are already in my closet, but the others are still available as of this writing.

Color Palette

For this cruise capsule wardrobe, I chose black and white for my neutrals, and Caribbean blue for a pop of color.

Tops

Choosing the tops for this color palette was fun. Of course, for versatility you want a black top and a white one, plus several patterns for color. I chose a mixture of sleeveless, short-sleeve, and 3/4-sleeve options.

Bottoms

Again, for versatility, I chose a pair of white and a pair of black long pants, a blue pair of cropped pants, a white pair of capris, and a pair of jean shorts.

Dresses

Cruise lines will typically have one or two dressy nights on a seven-night cruise, so you will want to be prepared. Also, if you dine at a specialty restaurant or at the suites restaurant, you will want to look your best.

These two options in black will be perfect for dressier evenings. The jumpsuit can be dressed up or down with the right accessories and shoes.

Outerwear

Although the Caribbean is hot, the cruise ship can be chilly, as can the airplane when you are traveling. So, just in case, I included a cute white jean jacket, plus a black cardigan sweater.

Beachwear

Cruising to the Caribbean means beach time (as well as pool time onboard), so you want to be prepared. I chose two swimsuits and a dress coverup that works with either swimsuit.

Shoes

Comfortable shoes are extremely important on a cruise because of all the walking you will be doing, both onboard the ship and on excursions. A sneaker is perfect, and the Allbirds Skippers are my pick for comfort. I’ve included two pairs of sneakers, plus a low heel for evening (in case you want to dance the night away), and a casual sandal.

Accessories

For excursions in the Caribbean, you will want a theft-resistant crossbody bag, a packable sun hat, a pretty clutch for evening, and sunglasses. I also suggest a Travelon tote for traveling. And don’t forget your jewelry!

OUTFITS WE CAN MAKE FOR EACH DAY

Using the items chosen, we can make many outfit combinations. Here are some suggestions on a day-by-day basis for what we could wear.

Travel Day

It will be cold in the Inland Northwest when we leave home, so I’ll opt for long pants for travel. Layering will ensure adaptability to different climates. We will be flying cross-country, making it an all-day trip, so I want to be comfortable.

That evening, we will stay in a hotel and get a good night’s rest before the cruise begins the next day.

Day 1: Embarkation Day

Embarkation Day in Fort Lauderdale is apt to be hot and sunny, so I will plan to dress accordingly. Comfortable shoes will be a must as there will be a lot of walking on that day.

For the evening, we will dine in The Retreat restaurant, which calls for dressing up.

Day 2: Nassau

For Nassau, we have a Jeep excursion planned with a beach break, which means we need to wear our swimsuits underneath our clothing. Just in case we get dusty, it will be a good idea to dress very casually for this day.

When we return to the ship, we will need to shower and change, so a new outfit is needed. On this evening, dinner will be casual, so the outfit can take us from day to night.

Day 3: At Sea

This is our first at-sea day, which means this night will probably be a dress-up night, so we will have two outfits today. For day, we will probably enjoy the pool for the day, and for night, we will want to look our best.

Here are a couple of outfits from our wardrobe that will work:

Day 4: Cozumel

In Cozumel, we have a foodie excursion booked, so no need for shorts or swimsuits. The excursion outfit will take us through the rest of the day until it is time to change for dinner.

Day 5: At Sea

A casual day at sea is just the ticket for Day 5, but at night, you might want to eat at a specialty restaurant and dress up a bit.

Day 6: George Town

George Town is the home of Stingray City, and we have an outing planned there for the day. As in Nassau, we will dress very casually and wear our swimsuits beneath our clothing.

After returning to the ship, I could change into this outfit for the rest of the day:

Day 7: At Sea

On this last day at sea, I could wear an outfit that can take me from day to night with only a change of shoes. Switching from sneakers to sandals and changing my jewelry would transform this ensemble.

Day 8: Disembarkation Day & Travel Home

Again, for travel I will want to layer. A 3/4-sleeve top and jeans will be perfect for the long travel day.

Other Clothing Needs

Absolutely needed for your trip but not mentioned above are pajamas, bras, and underwear.

PACKING LIST

All of the items listed (plus your pajamas, underwear, toiletries, and other essentials) should easily pack into a medium-size suitcase, especially since you will be holding out your travel outfit. Here is what you would be packing:
