Booking specialty restaurants for your upcoming cruise on Norwegian? You should try the NCL Ocean Blue restaurant…its seafood and steaks are out of this world. In this post, we will review the restaurant and its food, plus provide you with a sample menu.

We dined at Ocean Blue for the first time on our most recent Greek Isles cruise on Norwegian Breakaway. I am not a seafood eater but my husband is, so I was a little skeptical going in, concerned that there wouldn’t be any entrees for me.

Wow, was I wrong!

The Details

  • Specialty: Fresh seafood
  • Hours: 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Dress Code: Smart Casual

The Ambiance

Ocean Blue is an upscale venue with an elegant but welcoming vibe. The decor is mostly cream leather with warm wood accents, inviting you to sit and relax in semicircular padded booths or banquettes, or at tables for two or four.

The Service

We found the service at Ocean Blue to be quick and friendly, the waitstaff eager to please. Our dishes arrived quickly and our orders were hot and correct, which is what you would expect.

The Menu

Indulge in a menu filled with delectable seafood delights – all the classics you’d expect such as clam chowder, surf and turf, beer-battered fish and chips, and grilled salmon. Not to mention the elevated options like seafood linguini or cioppino.

For those landlubbers (like myself), Ocean Blue showcases filet mignon and roasted brick chicken. And don’t worry, vegetarians haven’t been forgotten. There’s even a mouthwatering roasted cauliflower steak.

Appetizers

For appetizers, we had our choice of clam chowder, gumbo, iceberg wedge, or roasted beets. We both chose the iceberg wedge, and it was as pretty as it was delicious.

Entrees

For our entrees, Myron ordered the cioppino, a soup made with lobster, shrimp, scallops, clams, and mussels in a tomato-lobster broth with rustic baguettes.

Rather than choose the chicken, I ordered the 8-ounce filet mignon, and was so glad I did.

With our entrees, we had our choice of two sides, the choices being French fries, jasmine rice, potatoes au gratin, coleslaw, vegetable medley, or steamed asparagus. Myron chose the coleslaw and jasmine rice, and I had the coleslaw and potatoes au gratin. All were as delicious as you would expect.

Myron thoroughly enjoyed his cioppino, finding it tasty and well-seasoned. I was blown away by my filet, though. I’ve had many filets in my day, but this one had to be the very best I’ve ever had. It surpassed the quality of filets I’ve had in specialty steakhouses!

Dessert

For dessert, Myron ordered the key lime meringue pie, which turned out to be a tart, and I ordered the vanilla cheesecake in a jar. Both desserts were absolutely yummy.

Adjacent to Ocean Blue on Norwegian Breakaway are two other venues: Wasabi and the Raw Bar. At Wasabi, enjoy watching sushi and yakatori made before your eyes while you sit at an upscale bar.

At the Raw Bar, you can sit at the counter and order a quick snack of oysters, shellfish, or crudo to enjoy with a glass of wine or a cocktail.

Final Thoughts on NCL Ocean Blue Restaurant

Ocean Blue is one of Norwegian Cruise Line’s specialty restaurants, which means there is an additional cost to dine there. But in my opinion, it’s worth it. The prices are similar to what you would pay at a nice seafood restaurant on land, and the quality of the food is just as good, if not better.

So, reserve a table at Ocean Blue and enjoy the freshest seafood and most delicious filet onboard!
