Thinking of booking a dinner at Norwegian’s Cagney’s Steakhouse? On our recent twelve-day cruise to the Caribbean on Norwegian Joy, we ate Cagney’s Steakhouse not once but twice…that’s how much we enjoyed it. We’ve eaten there several times now, and here’s our honest review.

About Cagney’s Steakhouse

Cagney’s Steakhouse on Norwegian Cruise Line is one of the most popular dining venues onboard their ships. It’s a classic American steakhouse with a contemporary twist, offering guests an elegant and sophisticated dining experience. Whether you’re a steak lover or simply enjoy high-quality cuisine, Cagney’s is an excellent choice for an unforgettable meal. Every time we cruise on Norwegian, we always have at least one dinner at Cagney’s, most recently on our Caribbean cruise a couple of weeks ago.

The Details

  • Specialty: Steakhouse
  • Hours: 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Dress Code: Smart Casual
  • Cover Charge: À la carte plus 20% gratuity, or you can use your dining package or a Latitudes dining coupon

The Decor

First, let’s talk about the atmosphere. Cagney’s has a warm and inviting ambiance, with dim lighting and comfortable seating. The decor is stylish and modern, with a hint of classic elegance. The venue is quite large, with seating that extends to an area in the back.

One unique thing about Cagney’s that sets it apart from most upscale specialty restaurants is that its kitchen is open to the dining room, allowing you to see the chef and his team at work.

The Menu

As the name suggests, Cagney’s Steakhouse specializes in steak, but they also offer a variety of seafood and other dishes for those who prefer something different. The menu features a selection of cuts, including filet mignon, ribeye, and porterhouse, all of which are cooked to perfection and served with your choice of sauces and sides. The seafood options are equally impressive, with offerings such as grilled salmon and seared scallops.

Cagney’s takes pride in their attention to detail. The chefs use only the finest ingredients, and everything is cooked to order. They also offer a selection of premium wines and cocktails to complement your meal, with a sommelier available to help you with your selections. And if you have any dietary restrictions or preferences, the staff is happy to accommodate you.

The Bread

Once you’re seated, your waiter stops by with menus and to introduce themself. They check to see if you’re using a dining package or coupon, and ensure you know what you’re entitled to with your particular payment option.

A moment later, your waiter returns with a fresh, hot loaf of rosemary bread. It’s so good, it never lasts long at our table!

The Appetizers

Appetizers on the Cagney’s Steakhouse menu are divided into either Starters or Soups and Salads, and you’re entitled to one from each category. Don’t worry if you’re like me and don’t eat seafood (the starters are all seafood); it’s fine if you choose two options from Soups and Salads instead.

For our meals, we chose the Iceberg Wedge, Baked Onion Soup, Crab Cake, and the Jumbo Shrimp Trio. All were good except the Crab Cake, which contained a good many small pieces of shell.

The Iceberg Wedge is the best I’ve had anywhere, with lots of bacon bits, garlic, spring onions, and blue cheese. I always order mine with Ranch dressing, which tones down the blue cheese a bit. Myron orders his with balsamic vinaigrette and finds it just as tasty.

The Baked Onion Soup is just as you’d expect: rich and cheesy. I usually share mine with Myron so I can save room for the entrée.

The Entrees

For entrées, we always order either the Ribeye or the eight-ounce Filet Mignon, both of which are always perfectly cooked and delicious. You have your choice of sauce with your steak, and I always choose Béarnaise, and Myron opts for the House Made Steak Sauce.

Note: If you are using your dining package or Latitudes coupon, there is a supplemental charge for the Porterhouse, the Surf and Turf, or adding a Lobster Tail to any entrée. However, there is no extra charge for a sauce.

The Sides

An assortment of sides is available, but we both ordered a Baked Russet Potato, which comes unadorned, and added Onion Rings and Steamed Broccoli. Before you can blink, your waiter arrives with a tray of condiments for your baked potato, including shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, and green onion. Curiously, they don’t provide butter for your baked potato unless you ask for it, or you have some left over that was served with your bread.

To be honest, we’re not huge fans of Cagney’s side dishes. I’d love to see the Truffle Mashed Potatoes replaced with regular mashed potatoes, and the Truffle Dusted Fries replaced with classic steak fries. Not everyone cares for truffle oil. I’d also like to see the Steamed Broccoli replaced with something like haricot verts or snap peas sauteed in butter. Steamed vegetables just aren’t very appetizing with no butter and no seasoning.

Pro Tip: If you want butter on your baked potato, be sure to add it quickly before the waiter returns with the other condiments.

Dessert

To me, the dessert is the best part of the meal, and I always enjoy getting to that point. For this meal, we chose the Apple Pie with Ice Cream (which is really a tart) and the Cheesecake. Both were excellent.

The Service

The dining experience at Cagney’s goes beyond just the food. The service is exceptional, with attentive and friendly staff who are always eager to make your meal as enjoyable as possible. Whether you need recommendations on the menu or simply want to chat with your server, they go above and beyond to make you feel welcome.
