When it comes to dining with Norwegian vs. Celebrity, both cruise lines excel in their own way.

Both cruise lines have spas, casinos, and swimming pools. Both offer Deal or No Deal, theater productions, art auctions, comedy performances, spa seminars, professional photography sessions, kids clubs, and musical performances.

Norwegian is known for its vibrant and lively entertainment, including Broadway-style shows, comedy acts, live music performances, and thrilling water parks. The cruise line takes pride in its wide array of engaging activities, such as ropes courses, go-kart tracks, and laser tag, catering to families, couples, and thrill-seekers alike. Norwegian also offers Bingo, which Celebrity does not.

Below is the schedule for a recent sea day on Norwegian.

Celebrity focuses more on refined and sophisticated entertainment experiences. Guests can enjoy live music, theater productions, and enrichment programs such as wellness programs and wine tastings, catering to those seeking a more relaxed and cultured onboard ambiance. Celebrity offers big-screen movies, which Norwegian does not.

Below is the schedule for a recent sea day on Celebrity.

Itineraries

Norwegian and Celebrity cover a vast range of destinations, providing travelers with exciting opportunities to explore different parts of the world.

Norwegian boasts a diverse selection of itineraries, including popular Caribbean destinations, Alaska’s stunning landscapes, and the enchanting Mediterranean. They often focus on providing flexibility and ample time at port, allowing guests to customize their shore excursions and explore independently.

Celebrity, while also offering similar destinations, places a strong emphasis on unique and immersive experiences. Their itineraries often feature overnight stays in iconic cities, extended hours in port, and exclusive shore excursions designed to showcase local culture and authentic experiences.

Below is a table comparing the destinations that Norwegian and Celebrity Cruises sail to. Note that they both sail to mostly the same destinations, with the exception that Celebrity also cruises to the Galapagos Islands, and Norwegian cruises to Antarctica.

The ports that each cruise line stops in at a particular destination may vary, however. For example, let’s look at the ports that both cruise lines sail to in Africa.

Norwegian sails to the southern part of Africa: Cape Town, South Africa; Mossel Bay, South Africa; Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), South Africa; Richards Bay, South Africa; Maputo, Mozambique; Fort Dauphin (Toalagnaro), Madagascar; Pointe Des Galets, Reunion; and Port Louis, Mauritius.

Celebrity sails to the northern part of Africa: Alexandria, Egypt; Tangier, Morocco; and Casablanca, Morocco.

As you can see, although both cruise lines sail to Africa, they have quite different itineraries. So, do your homework on the geography of the itineraries your chosen cruise line may sail.

Ship Size

Some cruisers prefer larger ships while others prefer smaller, more intimate ships. Although both cruise lines have a wide range of sizes in their fleets, there are differences.

Overall, Norwegian has larger ships by passenger capacity, with an average of 2,984 passengers per ship. Celebrity has three small expedition ships, which I removed from the calculation, and they have an average of 2,708 passengers per ship.

Crew-to-Passenger Ratio

The crew-to-passenger ratio plays a crucial role in providing personalized service and attention to detail.

Norwegian typically has a higher passenger capacity, resulting in a slightly lower crew-to-passenger ratio. However, Norwegian strives to ensure exceptional service by training their crew to provide a friendly and efficient experience.

Celebrity, with a reputation for attentive and personalized service, maintains a slightly higher crew-to-passenger ratio, allowing for a slightly more intimate and tailored experience.

Doing the math, the average crew-to-passenger ratio for Celebrity Cruises is approximately 1 crew member for every 2.08 passengers. For Norwegian Cruise Line, the average crew-to-passenger ratio is 1 crew member for every 2.26 passengers. The numbers used to calculate these ratios are shown above.

Suite Experience

Both Norwegian and Celebrity offer luxurious suite accommodations for passengers seeking an elevated experience.

Norwegian’s suite experience, known as The Haven, provides exclusive access to a private dining venue—the Haven Restaurant—as well as lounges, pools, and butler service.

Celebrity’s suite experience, called The Retreat, offers a private sundeck, lounge, and private restaurant—Luminae—along with butler service, providing a truly indulgent escape for discerning travelers.

One significant difference between the two experiences is that Norwegian’s Haven is predominantly in an enclave, where most of its cabins and all of its amenities are in an exclusive section of the ship that you need a Haven keycard to gain entrance to. Celebrity’s Retreat cabins are scattered over several decks, while the amenities are grouped near each other on high decks.

Pricing

In terms of price, Norwegian tends to be more budget-friendly compared to Celebrity.

Norwegian offers a variety of cruise options at different price points, including affordable rates for budget-conscious travelers. They often provide promotional deals, discounted fares, and inclusive packages that can help you save money on your cruise vacation.

Celebrity caters to a slightly higher-end market, with a focus on providing a more upscale and refined experience. As a result, their prices are generally higher than those of Norwegian, reflecting the enhanced amenities and services they offer, but they often offer promotional deals.

Booking Amenities

Both cruise lines offer convenient online booking platforms, making it easy for travelers to research and reserve their desired itineraries. Both also have mobile apps that are helpful during your cruise.

Norwegian provides a user-friendly website where you can explore different cruise options, select cabin categories, and customize your vacation. They often include additional perks, such as onboard credits, drink packages, or specialty dining reservations as part of their promotional offers or bundled packages known as Free at Sea.

Celebrity also offers a seamless online booking process, allowing guests to choose their desired staterooms, dining time preferences, and additional amenities. Celebrity is known for its truly all-inclusive pricing option, which provides guests with various perks and benefits such as unlimited beverage packages, onboard credit, and complimentary gratuities.

Cruise-only pricing that doesn’t include a beverage package, Wifi, onboard credit, or other benefits is also available with both cruise lines.

Casinos

If you are a gambler, you’ll notice significant differences between the casinos on Celebrity and Norwegian. Yes, they both have the requisite slot machines and table games, and they both have loyalty programs, but the way the casinos are run is where the differences lie.

Norwegian’s casinos are smoking with non-smoking sections. Their casinos may stay open all night, however, depending on how close they are to port (casinos must close within a certain distance of port). They also have frequent tournaments for slots, blackjack, and Texas Hold’em, including annual tournaments with large purses. Players receive drink cards based on their tier in the casino’s loyalty program.

Celebrity’s casinos are all non-smoking, and close by 1:00 a.m. at the latest and reopen at 9:00 a.m. unless they’re in port. Unlike Norwegian’s, they never stay open all night. Celebrity has tournaments, but they’re not as frequent and are very small. Well drinks are free for all active players in the casino.

Overall Value

Determining the overall value of a cruise experience involves considering various factors, as we’ve discussed above, and both cruise lines offer exceptional value. Compared to a stay in a fine hotel, adding in your dining and beverage costs, plus entertainment, a cruise is a bargain.

Norwegian includes a wide range of dining choices, numerous onboard activities, and a vibrant entertainment scene. Their ships often feature innovative amenities such as water parks, go-kart tracks, and Broadway-style shows, ensuring guests have a memorable time onboard.

While Celebrity may have higher prices, they place an emphasis on gourmet dining, enrichment programs, luxurious accommodations, and attentive service. Their ships are known for their modern design, impressive artwork, and spacious staterooms.

What I Like About Each Cruise Line

My husband and I swing back and forth between Celebrity and Norwegian, both liking and disliking aspects of each line over the other.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity’s ships are easier to navigate, being somewhat smaller, and have a solarium, an adults-only covered area with a pool and hot tubs in a serene environment. Their buffet has more international options, and the food is better.

Also, the suites restaurant, Luminae, has better service, with a dedicated team caring for you as you dine rather than just a waiter. Their concierge service is better, with friendly concierges eager to help you in any way they can. The Retreat suites on Edge-class ships also have a control for the lighting and drapes, which you can even access through your app. Your butler delivers treats, but they’re spare, with the Retreat wanting suite guests to take advantage of an afternoon snack buffet available in the Retreat Lounge.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian has more fun activities, such as their Galaxy Pavilion on Norwegian Joy with a Formula 1 race car simulator that my husband loves, plus go-karts. The Getaway and Breakaway have ropes courses.

The suite experience is slightly better overall because of the Haven’s enclave concept, keeping most of the amenities together in an exclusive area. The snacks delivered by your butler are almost too much each day, but give you something to nosh on after a long evening when you return to your cabin. The Haven restaurant has a breakfast buffet, which is wonderful when you’re in a hurry and just want to pick up a few things before you head out on an excursion. On the Joy, the Horizon Lounge in the Haven is a well-kept secret in the bow of the ship. It has amazing views, an espresso machine, and all-day snacks available.

Final Thoughts on Norwegian Vs. Celebrity

Choosing the perfect cruise line for your next vacation is a highly personal decision that depends on your preferences, interests, and desired experience. Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises both offer exceptional journeys with their own distinctive features.
