Hasuki is a reimagination of Teppanyaki, an old favorite for guests of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), and is now a sleeker, more contemporary version. Only available on the Prima and Viva, it will soon be available on the Aqua in 2025. We dined at Hasuki on NCL Prima on our recent transatlantic cruise and had a great time.

Here is my honest review of this new specialty restaurant.

The Details

  • Specialty: Japanese teppanyaki
  • Location: Deck 7 mid
  • Hours: 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Dress Code: Smart Casual
  • Cover Charge: $59

The Decor

Hasuki’s decor is very sleek, all black and cobalt with pops of orange. The pottery and glassware displayed ties everything together in a harmonious way. If memory serves me, there are four hibachi grills with seating for twelve, which is a little tight, to be honest. Seating ten at each table would be more comfortable.

The Menu

All meals at Hasuki include edamame, soup, salad, choice of entrée, and dessert.

The edamame, soup, and salad are the same for all. You choose from a selection of several entrées and two options for dessert.

Entrée choices include New York Strip, Chicken with udon noodles, Seafood (jumbo shrimp, sea scallops, calamari), Teriyaki Glazed Tofu, and Vegetables with Udon noodles. You can also choose from four set combinations of the above.

The Appetizer, Soup, and Salad

Once we were seated and our drinks were delivered, we were presented with a small bowl of salted edamame, which is soybeans in the pod. Delicious!

Just don’t eat the pod itself; catch the pod between your teeth and pull, releasing the beans into your mouth.

Next came the miso soup, a mixture of mushrooms, tofu, and wakame (algae) in dashi, which is broth. It’s very tasty.

The servers set up our place settings with two sauces, and I can never remember which sauce goes with meat and which goes with vegetables. So, I use both with abandon and love them.

After the soup, a colorful seaweed salad with a tangy ginger dressing was served. Don’t worry if you don’t normally care for seaweed; this salad has no fishy taste. Trust me…I detest seafood and wouldn’t eat it if it had the slightest taste of fish.

Fried Rice

The fried rice was prepared on the grill with white rice, egg, garlic, and soy sauce. Generous portions were served, and if you wanted more, it was available.

Entrée

I chose the steak as my entrée, New York Strip. Surprisingly, it was tasty and very tender, almost like filet mignon. I was very pleased with it.

Entertainment

Our chef was quite entertaining, keeping up a lively banter from the time he introduced himself and began preparing the grill for cooking. His singing voice was amazingly good, and he encouraged us all to sing too. Before we knew it, everyone at our table was loudly singing old favorites along with him.

Dessert

For dessert, the choices are Green Tea Cake (served with green tea ice cream) or Fruit Sashimi (exotic fruits). I chose the cake and wasn’t disappointed.

The Service

The service at Hasuki was fantastic. Beverages and courses were delivered quickly, and all the orders were done correctly.

Dietary Accommodations

One member of our group had a gluten allergy, so she notified the restaurant the day before and selected her menu ahead of time. The chef showed her the gluten-free soy sauce that he was using to prepare her meal separately, assuring her that she would be safe.

NCL is quite dedicated to providing guests with food allergies or sensitivities with safe and high-quality food, which we observed throughout this cruise. We were quite impressed.
